news at nine on mute

The news at nine on mute in a motel room somewhere between Tucson and Modesto.

The wind outside — cacophony from the jawless mouth of night — punctures through the atoms of glass and plaster like some gutless, untamed, slithering thing.

I listen as the black trees quiver and mourn their leaves.
